Walk and Talk is a peer support walking group for young people in Maroondah aged 16-25 years old. This group is a supportive space for all young people with lived experience of mental health or looking to make connections within the community. The group provides a safe space, open for all kinds of conversation while being supported by a youth worker and a provisional psychologist.
All volunteers will be provided with training and ongoing support.
Your role as a volunteer would involve:
- Building rapport with young people to ensure they feel welcome and engaged with the program.
- Participate in the fortnightly walking group.
- Alerting the youth development worker of any conversations of concern from the young people.
- Contribute to a safe and welcoming environment for all participants.
- Communicate in a respectful and friendly manner with all young people.
Who is this role for?
- Someone who is aged between 18-25
- Someone with a connection to Maroondah (work, live, study or play)
- Someone who has OR is studying a Youth Work / Social Work / Community Services (or relevant)
- Someone looking for practical experience working with young people
- Someone looking to gain insight into Council Youth Services
- Someone who is passionate about mental health and raising the wellbeing of young people
Time & location:
- The walk will begin from EV’s Youth Centre (212 Mt Dandeong Road, Croydon, 3136) at 4:30pm. We will then walk 4km of the Tarralla Creek Trail (Croydon, 3136) before meeting back at EV’s Youth Centre at 5:30pm.
- You would be expected to arrive at 4.15pm & would finish at 6pm.
Expectations:
- We expect that you are on time and notify the Youth Workers if you are unable to attend / are running late
- We expect that you are consistently available to volunteer at the program and notify the Youth Workers if you are unable to attend
- We expect that you maintain professional boundaries with participants and do not engage with them outside of the program (e.g. adding on social media, messaging, socialising, supporting, etc).
- We expect that you act in a professional & respectful manner while engaging with participants
- We expect that you raise any conversations of concern with the lead Youth Worker
